Bedford Pumps can trace their involvement in the Land Drainage industry back through lineage to 1849 when their predecessor John Gwynne with his son James, started making pumps at Essex Street Wharf in London. Gwynnes were later acquired by W H Allen, subsequently becoming a member of Amalgamated Power Engineering Ltd and then trading as Allen Gwynne Pumps in Bedford. Gwynnes took a specialised interest in land drainage and irrigation pumping problems and developed a range of rotodynamic pumps for land drainage applications.
The key premise in draining the land, particularly in a flood situation, is to move very large volumes of water quickly. Bedford Pump’s range of pumps can discharge water at up to 20,000 l/s. This means that just one pump alone could empty an Olympic sized swimming pool in under two minutes.
In their 30 years of trading Bedford Pumps have made installations in over 100 Land Drainage sites across the UK alone. With an average of 3 pumps installed per site Bedford Pumps are delivering 2.8 Million m3 of flow per DAY (assuming 10% utilisation).
Bedford Pumps are an associated member of ADA (The Association for Drainage Authorities), which was established in the United Kingdom in 1937 to watch over and support the interests of drainage authorities at a national and parliamentary level.
